Social engineering is a reconnaissance type of attack. Generally when executing a social engineering attack, you are lying to a targeted company employee or targeted individual in order to learn critical information about a person or business. For example, I could call a hotel and pretend to be an IT guy from their headquarters office --- I then tell them there have been issues with the database and I need them to read off information to me. Then I may know someone's name and room number, which allows me to call them and would be understandably freaky if some random person called your hotel phone and started saying your first and last name, YIKES!

Social engineering is a reconnaissance tactic to gain any and all information which might help a hacker exploit vulnerabilities in a company’s network.
